What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of getting a brand named and cited in the answers AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI give to buyers.

Diagram comparing SEO and GEO: classic search returns ten blue links the buyer scans and clicks, while AI search returns one answer naming specific brands, built from the sources the AI reads such as reviews, listicles, Reddit and your own site.
SEO gets you ranked in a list of links. GEO gets you named in the one answer the buyer actually reads.

Where SEO aims to rank a page in a list of blue links, GEO aims to get your brand into the answer itself, the single response an AI assistant hands a buyer who asks what to use or buy.

GEO work spans three areas: measuring whether AI names you, creating content built to be quoted, and earning mentions on the third-party sources AI cites most, such as Reddit, review sites and listicles.

GEO shares a crawlable technical foundation with SEO, so both benefit from clean HTML, server rendering and structured data. The difference is the goal: being the cited answer, not one of ten links.
